Get a handle on skin problems - Take control.

If you have a skin problem, it’s important to understand what it is and what to do about it. Skin problems can range from mild aesthetic issues to major health concerns. Common skin problems include acne, psoriasis, rosacea, eczema, and skin cancer. Recognizing the signs of a skin condition and taking the proper steps to treat it are key to keeping your skin healthy.

Acne is one of the most common skin problems, affecting more than 50 million Americans each year. It is characterized by bumps, redness and oiliness of the skin, and usually occurs due to bacteria, dead skin cells, and oil that clogs the pores. To treat acne, you can use over-the-counter products such as creams or gels with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, or you may need prescription medication.

Psoriasis is a skin disorder that affects about 3 percent of Americans. It is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease that causes raised patches of red, scaly skin, usually on the elbows, knees or scalp. To treat psoriasis, doctors often recommend topical creams combined with ultraviolet light therapy.

Rosacea is a skin condition that causes facial redness and flushing. It usually begins with redness on the cheeks and nose, and can gradually spread to the forehead and chin. Common treatments include antibiotics and topical creams.

Eczema is an inflammatory skin condition that most commonly affects children. It is characterized by itchy, dry and cracked skin. Treatment for eczema usually involves moisturizing the skin and avoiding irritants, as well as using topical corticosteroids or immunomodulators.

Finally, skin cancer is the most serious skin problem. Skin cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the skin begin to grow and divide unregulated, and is caused by too much exposure to UV radiation from the sun. If you are at risk of skin cancer or suspect that you may have it, it’s important to see a dermatologist right away.

If you have any of these skin problems, it’s important to be aware of the signs and symptoms and to take the necessary steps to seek treatment. Your dermatologist will be able to help you find the best treatment plan for your specific condition.
